How to Create a Comfortable Library

Libraries are a big part of my life— and I would suggest you make them a big part of yours, but you do you.

Lately, I have been planning a “some day home”— one that I will probably never be able to afford, but it’s a fun diversion nonetheless. This list is a few things that I think a library should have to make it a comfortable place to study and relax.
I love this print from AmandaWhiteDesign on Etsy. The colours are somewhat balanced, and cozy— perfect for a library. Plus, the houses of famous artists make great inspiration in both writing (channeling the greats) and reading (because so many writers are inspired by their own homes).

I am a big fan of buying original art pieces from local artists or small business artists rather than purchasing mass prints because it means that no one else will have the same one. Another great thing is that shopping on Etsy provides small businesses income, which is great for everyone.

My sister introduced me to these candles from Frostbeard on Etsy. The scents are inspired by different books or book characters. Just be careful you don’t set your reading material alight.

No library would be complete without a comfortable place to read. I like to really lounge with a book, so I can’t have just an armchair. It has to be a sofa. Velvet adds such a nice touch to a library— it plays off the book bindings, the shelves, it adds a coziness to what could otherwise be a very severe room. Currently, I like this one from Crate and Barrel, although I’d have to test it for optimal comfort before I decide for sure. You can find other sofas like this here.Screen Shot 2016-03-03 at 6.08.31 pm

I have a desk that I inherited, an antique cherry wood number, but you can find some of my favourites here, here, and here.

Finally, I think a library needs a large rug to tie the room together. I like the idea of a rug that is aged, or old fashioned like a Persian or Floral Pattern. As I’ve previously posted I really like art deco and industrial designs as well. My perfect library would have a fireplace and wall to wall shelving and a big rug to curl up on, in front of the fireplace.Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 4.08.56 pm

I avoid white because it shows too much dirt (or snack residue). These are a few of my favourites: this blue art deco, the multi-color India inspired, and the honey-comb.

Let me know what you think, if you see anything that inspired you or if you have any of these items at home. If you have any suggestions on building a comfy library feel free to leave a comment!
